A pilates reformer is a resistance-based exercise machine comprising a sliding carriage, a spring system and a system of pulleys and ropes. As the user pushes or pulls against the carriage, the springs provide adjustable resistance that challenges muscles through a full range of motion. Unlike floor-based Pilates, the reformer allows for greater movement variation, deeper muscle engagement and more precise control, making it effective for rehabilitation, strength, flexibility and posture improvement.
Most reformers use five springs. The Exhale Aura, Luma & Una reformers feature five German-engineered springs, offering a full range of resistance combinations for both light and heavy loading. The quality of the spring system matters as much as the number, the German-engineered springs across the Exhale range are calibrated for consistent tension that doesn't degrade over time.
The Xpeed Exhale range of reformers feature a total of 5 springs: 2 red springs, 2 blue springs and 1 yellow spring.
For most Australian home users, the answer comes down to space and practice level. If you're beginning or returning to practice, the Xpeed Exhale Aura, a foldable Thai oak reformer with a 120kg max load, offers exceptional quality at an accessible entry point. If you're an intermediate to advanced practitioner with a dedicated studio space, the Luma (150kg max, North American maple) or the Una (aluminium, foldable) deliver a more demanding spring system. All three fold for compact storage.
